Blog v Wiki
There are many similarities between blogs and wikis. For example, Both are new forms of media that the users can edit and publish their own work. Both are free to use and for the most part have small learning curves when it comes to using them. They are both used to keep record of information online for anyone to see and to comment on. However, there are a lot of distinct differences between the two as well.
The main difference is collaboration. Blogs are generally run by an individual looking to share their opinion in their own personal space about anything they want, and occasionally have other collaborators as well. Wikis form of collaboration deals with many people coming together and using their minds to create an objective database of knowledge in which anyone can edit information. Wikis goal is to share factual knowledge with anyone, while blogs goal is to share their opinions on any topic they want. With more collaborators, wikis evolve and grow much faster than bloggers, and they are able to keep up with new information and updates. Blog however, grow more slowly and since posts are opinion based, can become stale and outdated quickly. User interaction based on collaboration is different too. If someone reading a wiki finds incorrect info, they can easily gain access and edit the information for correctness and clarity. They can even communicate with the original editor if needed. Blogs however, only allows comments on the original posts, and bloggers can create a conversation based on the topic of the post.
Wikis and blogs level of interaction are extremely important to how we as a society interact in today's networked world. Regardless of how we interact, we are coming together and converging our thoughts and ideas together. Whether it is to have a discussion or to create a database of information, coming together only enriches and improve upon the experience we have. If we weren't able to collaborate, it would make the experience of sharing our opinion dull and boring for the reader and writer. We wouldn't be able to collect large amount of knowledge wikis collect correct or informative. In this day and age we would fall behind everyone else. In this day and age, how fast we can access and process is extremely important. in their current state, Blogs and wikis do a lot to keep us connected and interacting with others.
Blogs can be extremely useful in an education setting. Teachers can have direct contact with parents and students. Parents can be updated on school assignments, deadlines and announcements. Students can use it the same way, but they can actually use the blog as a great tool for learning. Teachers can post assignments and create discussion on topics students went over in class to further their learning. Students can run their own blog as a project. In Mike Wallagher's How Blogging is Being Used in the Classroom Today: Research Results, he describes that students can use blogs to teach them "writing techniques, online publishing, and proper internet etiquette, which most students will use in their future careers.". Lessons and additional materials could be easily accessible on a class blog, The possibility for learning on blogs is endless. One day, Maybe even Wikis can be used to teach students necessary skills they need in life.
